Fear of Vomiting (emetophobia)

About Emetophobia & your fear of being sick:

The fear of being sick is far more common than you would have expected. In fact the fear of being sick is actually the fifth most common phobia, known as Emetophobia derived from the Greek word “emein” which means “an act or instance of vomiting”. Emetophobia is described by Wikipedia as; an intense, irrational fear or anxiety pertaining to vomiting. This specific phobia can also include subcategories of what causes the anxiety, including a fear of vomiting in public, a fear of seeing vomit, a fear of watching the action of vomiting or, the fear of being nauseated.

Let go of your fear of being sick:

However, the fear of being sick and the fear of other people being sick is rarely mentioned or discussed openly compared to other more common fears or phobias. People with a fear of being sick can often go to great lengths to avoid public places, public transport and other similar scenarios that most people take for granted. If you suffer with emetophobia you already know what power the fear can hold over your life. The fear of being sick can literally constrict your life so that you feel you have little choice but to live with a variety of limitations. For example, a hospital is a place we associate with sickness and illness, so visiting a loved patient can fill them with complete dread. The very thought of being within such a potentially unhealthy environment rings alarm bells in their mind, making them believe it is dangerous or that they will fall sick themselves.

People with emetephobia can be over sensitive when others around them that are feeling unwell. They can be very particular about foods they consume, concerned about where they were made and the environment in which they may have been produced. They could be acutely aware of media reports about epidemics, the norovirus. This sensitivity may lead to unnecessary levels of anxiety and stress within their life. Interestingly, most people with emetophobia rarely, if ever, vomit. Some sufferers report that they have not thrown up since childhood, yet they constantly worry that it might happen.

A few examples of common situations that could affect people with emetophobia:

  • They rarely eat out in restaurants and are very choosy – avoiding chicken, spicy or unusual cuisines.
  • They do not drink or restrict themselves to a single glass of wine.
  • They do not like pubs or clubs.
  • They dislike dinner parties, weddings, social events and crowded rooms which can lead to anxiety / panic attacks.
  • They eat little in public and sit near a door.
  • They frequently check sell-by dates on food packaging.
  • They avoid flying, boat travel and public transport.
  • They prefer to travel by car and drive.
  • At a cinema or theatre, they insist on sitting at the end of a row.
  • They avoid pregnancy through fear of morning sickness and also fear having a child and not being able to care for them if they were to become sick.
  • They avoid anyone with a real or imagined sickness bug – either within their own environment or in public places.
  • They are very aware of pavements and check weather forecasts to see when rain is due.
