Lose Weight & Willpower

Weight loss articles by ‘The Hypnosis Expert’

Take the quiz to assess the ‘power’ of your ‘will’:

Answer the following questions truthfully and without taking time to think too long:

Do you wake up early to get a jump on your day at least 6 days per week?
Do you choose healthy snacks over goodies and sweets?
Are you always in control of what you eat?
Do you hit the gym at least three times a week?
Are you the person that arrives early AND stays late regularly?
Do you hold your tongue unless what you want to say is actually important?

If you answered “Yes” to 4 or more of these questions, then you are probably a fairly strong-willed individual. And rationally, you should be able to lose weight and stay at the weight you want to be, without any problems at all. However, that probably isn’t the case even if you came out with a strong-will. Otherwise you probably would not be reading this article!

If you had more “No” answers than “Yes” answers, then according to the quiz, you may lack a strong will.

But what if neither a strong will nor a weak will mattered?

Let me coach you through a concept of paramount importance. It’s called Reframing – and like reframing a picture on your wall, it can give your conception of willpower a healthy and beautiful makeover!

Many people talk about willpower, in fact in other articles I talk about willpower too. Willpower is what most people think is required to lose weight and they expect their ‘will’ to ‘power’ them to lose the weight that they desire to. But, just for a moment, let’s look at a new concept… What if there was no such thing as willpower? Now, you’re probably thinking ‘what’s he talking about? Of course willpower exists and is necessary for weight loss…’

Consider this:

What if willpower were just a label, a label you place on something you already deemed to be difficult? Like, I really need willpower to stick to eating healthy or to exercise, or it takes a great deal of willpower to not eat those sweet and naughty foods that pile on the pounds.

You would have created a self-fulfilling prophecy! If you say it takes willpower to accomplish a given task, then your mind goes, OK, so it must be hard!!!! But what about the things you enjoy doing, I mean really enjoy doing? Does it take willpower to do them as well?

Many people say to me, ‘Elliott, you must have so much willpower to go to the gym at 6.00am four to five days a week’ and I think to myself, ‘willpower, hmm…. No it doesn’t require any willpower on my part to go the gym.’ Why? Because I enjoy it, I really enjoy it and I am sure there are lots of things that you enjoy doing, that perhaps somebody else would not enjoy doing too. Therefore, to them it requires ‘willpower’.

So what is this “Reframing”?

Reframing is a powerful technique used in psychology. Let me give you a simple example: Let’s say you have a painting hanging on your living room wall. After you have lived with it for years and it’s always looked the same, each time you look at it you see the same thing in the picture. Nothing in the picture ever changes.

Then one day the picture falls off the wall and the frame is damaged. So you take the picture to the shop to have it reframed. You choose a new frame in a different colour. You take the picture home and hang it back up on the wall. And you suddenly notice things in the picture you hadn’t noticed before. You’re looking at it through different lenses. You have a new perspective!

Our perceptions of life’s concepts, issues and ideas are what is important, even more than their realities! The vantage point from which we choose to view our weight loss goals, or any other type, is vitally-important to our success and resulting happiness. You can achieve miracles simply by changing your mental vision!

So, imagine the possibilities to you losing weight if you reframed the word ‘willpower’?

Imagine two people; let’s say one is really “strong-willed” and the other “weak-willed”. Now, they both are sitting down with a plate of fattening food piled up in front of them. You suddenly take it away from both of them. Who do you think would get more annoyed?

That’s right; the strong-willed person would, because they dislike being told what to do, even by themselves! And they certainly don’t like feeling deprived. So what if losing weight, eating healthy and following a balanced exercise routine required no willpower? What if you looked at it not as deprivation, but as a rewarding experience that is fulfilling and life-sustaining instead?

How great will it be when you apply the principle of reframing to anything you choose?

You give your mind back control and put yourself back in the driver’s seat!
It doesn’t matter whether you think you have willpower or not…
When you learn to lose weight by Reframing!
Take control now and open up the infinite possibilities that are ahead of you!
