You know those old Popeye cartoons, where Popeye opens and eats the can of spinach and instantly his muscles bulge with incredible strength? He receives optimized effects instantaneously!

WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY IF YOU COULD SEE THE IMMEDIATE (AND I DO MEAN IMMEDIATE) WEIGHT GAIN, THAT RESULTS FROM ALL THOSE UNHEALTHY SNACKS?

Now, imagine all of the biscuits, sweets, crisps, fizzy drinks and other little nibbles that you consume in a month’s period. You know, all those little “harmless” snacks that you put inside your body while you are prepping a meal for the family or feeding the children. Just think about it for a second…

Now, imagine, like Popeye, you explode with the instant effects of all of those unhealthy snacks all at once. See your waist expanding. See inside yourself and watch your heart and arteries clogging and slowing. Envision your heavily-taxed digestive system being beaten down and your immune system instantly becoming unable to ward off the onslaught of diseases and ailments, that are constantly attacking us all. See your skin breaking out and feel your energy levels draining away – ALL AT ONCE!

Have you ever heard someone say (perhaps even yourself) that all they have to do is to look at a cream cake and they gain 8 pounds? Then they go ahead and buy it anyway?! They know that they are sabotaging their health and their diets, but they go ahead and do it anyway. They are failing to see those Popeye effects – they are not thinking about the fact that they are going to have to pay for those unhealthy decisions at some point in the not-so-distant future!

When I deliver my ‘Winning the Mental Weight Loss Game’ seminars, it’s really interesting, because it doesn’t matter what country I am in, the cultural upbringing of the attendees, their financial status, whether they work on a cash register or are on the board of directors of a multinational company – it doesn’t even matter if they are rich celebrities that fly me in and take great measures to remain anonymous – when I start talking about snacking and I ask for people in the audience to raise their hands if they engage in unhealthy snacking, all of the sudden, it’s like a sea of hands rising up. It is like a cresting wave, all agreeing that they snack when they shouldn’t, or snack on things that they know they shouldn’t eat.

My seminars are always interactive with full audience participation, so I’ll ask a number of the audience members, what is it they snack on that they don’t want to be snacking on?

The answers seem to be universal. Let’s take one of the answers I hear very often – crisps or potato chips (depending on where I am and what they call them). I ask them how many packets they eat in a week? I remember one lady said, “I eat at least two packets every day.

Just playing with her I said, why don’t you just simply not buy the potato chips in the first place?

She said, “Oh, no – I don’t buy them for myself.”

I then asked her who it is that she actually buys them for. “I buy them for my daughters packed lunches.’ she explained innocently.

“How many packets do you buy a week?” I asked.

She said, “I buy a large family pack.”

“How many packets come in the large family pack? I asked.

“About 24”, she said.

“And you eat two packets every day? Is that right?” I inquired.

“Yes.”

“And so every week you consume 14 packets, so that’s more than half the quantity you are buying. When you think about it like that, ask yourself this question: Are you really buying them for your daughter? Do you want your daughter to grow up and face the same weight loss challenges that you are facing?”.

And she looked at me and I could see her thinking about it and she said…

“Well I guess I’m just kidding myself”.

“Okay so you make up a story inside your head to make it seem okay to buy the potato chips, but now that you are really thinking about it, what could you do differently?”

“I could buy a couple of packets singly. In fact, my daughter doesn’t need a packet every day.”, she replied enthusiastically.

So, what I had actually accomplished was to force her mind to reconsider the aspects of pain and pleasure that she associated with her snacking habit. You see, many times, just by giving fresh, intentional consideration to the things that we have come to take for granted, we are able to instantaneously shed new light upon them. The lady above had come to associate the 2 bags of chips per day, as a simple and harmless pleasure. After she took just a minute to actually think about what was really happening, she immediately came to associate the chips with the pain that she experiences as a result of struggling constantly with her weight issues.

VERY OFTEN, WHAT YOU LINK PAIN TO AND WHAT YOU LINK PLEASURE TO HAVE A PROFOUND EFFECT ON ACHIEVING SLIMNESS!

Three months later back home in England, I received a letter from that lady, here are a couple of lines from that letter: ‘Thank you, Elliott. When I heard your seminar was thought provoking and totally different I was sceptical. After watching you and listening to all the fantastic techniques you shared with me, I am happy to say that myself and MY DAUGHTER only have the occasional packet of potato chips now. As a result of that and everything else I learned during your enlightening seminar, I am 40 pounds lighter and feel wonderful!”

Imagine trying to move a huge boulder by pulling, pushing, tugging and shoving on it. It is too large and too heavy. It will not budge. Now imagine using a lever to manoeuvre the boulder. With far less effort and exertion, you are able to reposition it. When you learn to reverse the way that you perceive the pain and pleasure of snacking, it’s the same as using a special “snacking” lever!

It is a fact that the human mind is driven by pain and pleasure. We wish to avoid pain and we wish to accentuate pleasure. Consider the child who places his hand on a glowing stove burner because it looks pretty. The pain is instant. The heat is incredible. The burn causes pain for days and serves as a powerful reminder to not EVER touch that pretty, glowing burner again. The pain forces the mind to associate the action with adversity – with PAIN.

The problem with food is that we delude ourselves that the unhealthy snacks that we eat between meals are actually pleasurable. We don’t receive the pain of the weight gain because we fail to recognize it immediately. In fact, we do not see and feel this pain until some time in the future.

WE HAVE GOT THE SIGNALS THE WRONG WAY AROUND!

If you wish to be successful at your slimming goals, then you must reverse your established conceptions concerning the painful verses the pleasurable aspects of your snacking habits. Remember, that no snack can possible taste so delicious that it is worth feeling the future pain of no longer fitting into that favourite dress. That unhealthy snack is never worth the pain of looking in the mirror and becoming emotionally distressed. A few packages of biscuits or candies, can never be worth feeling the pain of being unattractive to yourself.

Learn to reverse the pain and pleasure factors that you associate with snacking. Become instantaneously aware of the pain that unhealthy snacks will force upon you.

Change the direction of your pain/pleasure signals and slim yourself from the head down!
