So what is a phobia?

A phobia is a persistent, irrational fear of, and a desire to avoid, certain object/s, animals, events or situations. The word is derived from the Greek word “phobos” meaning extreme fear and flight. The ancient Greek god, Phobos, was believed to be able to reduce the enemies of the Greeks to a state of terror, making victory in battle more likely.

You are not born with a phobia – it is a learned response. A response that you have simply programmed into your mind, when confronted by the phobic stimulus and sometimes, even the anticipation or thought of the situation is enough to provoke the response; the person then begins to experience the classic symptoms of panic attacks. Using hypnotherapy, Elliott can re-programme your thoughts, change your associations and replace them with new, more appropriate feelings.

Fear of blushing

Erythrophobia is a common and persistent fear of facial blushing or blushing in general. Blushing is an unconscious reaction to an external stimulus which manifests itself by a sudden wave of redness that affects not only the face but also the neck, ears and forehead. When the condition is aggravated it can extend to the upper chest level. The redness appears very quickly. Sufferers of erythrophobia experience undue anxiety even though they realise their fear is irrational.

Some people can be aware of certain trigger that sets the blushing off such as blushing when talking to strangers, blushing when being served at a checkout by the opposite sex and blushing when the spot light is suddenly shone on you.

The anxiety results from worry about being the focus of attention and the subject of embarrassment. For others, it can seem as if the blushing has no specific trigger they simply find themselves blushing for no particular reason, what is common to the vast majority of all people that experience blushing is they become so aware of it, they are almost waiting for it to happen, before the blushing even begins so self-conscious it then becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, which in turn can even lead to avoiding the situations.

Hypnosis will help you control blushing to an extent where you will no longer turn red or feel that hot flushed sensation in your face, that tells you that you are blushing that in turn releases that embarrassing feeling where you think that everybody is looking at you. With hypnosis, you can learn to turn down the blushing and control the blushing to the point where it simply disappears.

Hypnosis can show you how to tap into the part of your mind that regulates your blood flow; hypnosis can show you how to change your perception, feelings and ultimately your response in any situation to alleviate the blushing; hypnosis can work with your unconscious mind to program in new, positive unconscious reactions to these external triggers to make blushing a thing of the past.
